Goal Setting

There’s a saying that without goals, we’ll forever be letting ourselves be bystanders to our circumstances. In other words, letting ourselves get pushed around by the whims of our parents, society, friends, nature, and whatever else that can influence our life. With goals, we can still leverage and acknowledge our trusted confidants, but the choices, directions, and momentum lie entirely within our internal mind and power.

Here are a few prompts to get you started:

  1. If I could wake up tomorrow and be, do, and have anything (in my career, personal relationships, finances) what might the top 3 be?
  2. If I did not have any fear, what are 2 things that I’d like to do?
  3. Imagine meeting the 5 most influential people in the world (they could be a celebrity crush, world leader, someone from history) what would you like to be able to say to them, and what would you like to be able to discuss with them?

Often, the biggest barrier to setting a goal that does not disappear as soon as you write it down on paper, is having a big enough “why”. We aren’t fixed rocks. As humans, we must understand that change happens automatically. Your next breath could mark the beginning of a new attitude, or emotional feeling. In this sense, the why’s can also change. What is important, is getting the initial why down and building the momentum to move forward. If the why behind a goal is not impactful, or powerful enough, the goal loses power, and joins that sullen cemetery of lost goals until someone else in the world picks it up, and creates a life around it. Be certain, be clear, and be descriptive about your goals, including the why.
