Two things matter most to me. My job and my work. But wait, before you jump, stay with me for one quick moment.
We’ve got traditional definitions for job and work, but I’d like to propose a new one.
What a job and work is, is a few things.
- Job – Something that you do, that you’re required to do. There’s a sense of necessity. You can’t not take this action.
- Work – Something that you will spend your life doing, that is inherent to your innate need as a person.
My work is to continue to learn, experience cultures, honoring our ancestors and those who have come before us, and most importantly, wrapping these things together so that I can bring the natural abundance of the world into reality.
Abundance is all around us if we choose to look. Whether it’s a gift or a human going out of their way to share what little or what excess they have. Abundance is bringing wealth to communities, bringing joy to people, bringing humans together to share or “compartir”.
Abundance isn’t the action of greed or destroying the environments around us for personal gain. Abundance is the action or the energy of supporting, of acknowleding the have and have-nots, and doing something about it.
Work is to be able to shine a light on that no matter where you are in the world, that it’s possible for humans to be open to receive and for humans to be open to giving. The work is taking an idea or a concept, and actualizing it into reality whether it is a company, community, event, financing, story, or more.
The biggest commitment I’ve made is to this definition of work, and to this definition of job.
A job isn’t just “just over broke”, or “something that pays the bills”. A job is something we do. There is a financial component in some cases, but in others a job is where we harness our energy on a daily basis, no matter the environment we’re in.
With this definition, my job for the past year has been to hold and create an environment where people can be heard. My job has been to co-create a space radically defined by presence. Of being open to non-judgement of others, and holding a space for myself to heal. My job is also to invite others to join me in that endeavor. For us to become better versions of ourselves. To hold an environment conducive to learning, sharing, giving, and communication.
This positive impact, has really appeared in my community building work. It’s a space where you can cry. In the work environment, it’s a space where you can feel respected, and that your opinion is heard without dismissiveness.
