I’ve seen, and been privy to this myself, but there are three things that we tend to do when we are not being authentic. I’ll start with the larger theme, and then we’ll dig into the mental and physical cues that you can begin to be mindful of.
- You are caught off guard
- You purposefully beguile, or mislead
- Your emotions are rough, and you get into a slump, and you can’t move forward
Your voice trembles, you can feel the pressure rising in your head, your cheeks might begin flushing. You realize that what you say, isn’t in line with what you mean to say. Your head shuts down and you are not responding from a space of presence. You might be operating from the past, or worse yet, thinking of the future (this is how you can tell a terrible sales person from a good one).
Begins a web of lies, which eventually a situation might arise where you’ll need to figure out what was “true” versus a “lie”.
You continue to “think about things” and you go in a circle round and round. You don’t have progress. You cry
But when you are Authentic, you can operate in three positive ways
- It’s impossible to be caught You won’t be caught in a lie
- Your presence allows you to think before you speak.
- You can communicate, and connect on a deeper level with the people around you.
